It's a totally self contained unit with built in computer, light switching components, music player, amplifier and speaker.  All you do is plug in your lights and turn up the volume. Plays twenty Christmas songs (ten in the "Siberian" style and ten in more traditional Christmas sound). Plug strands of lights or lighted items into the six outlets with circuits coordinated to the music. The effect is kaleidoscopic choreography with the music. This product is for outdoor and indoor use and has a K-Mart brand in the corner. PlanetChristmas recommends this product for the newbie.  It is not expandable in any way.  The songs don't exactly sound "symphony rated" but instead is computer generated MIDI tones (like your cellphone used to sound before you could download actual music ringtones.)  The lights don't dim, but flash on/off with the beat of the music.
